Buyer-guided discovery with Section ranking (Intent Survey)

Overview

Section ranking turns the welcome screen of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure (CYOA) playlist into a lightweight intent survey: before the buyer picks a section to explore, they drag the sections into the order that matters most to them. Their ranking then powers Insights so you can see, at scale, what buyers actually prioritize across every viewing of the playlist.

Use Section ranking when you want to:

  • Ask a buyer what matters most before they navigate — instead of guessing from clickstream data afterward.
  • Compare the story you tell (your section order) with the story your buyers want to hear (their ranking).
  • Roll up buyer priorities across an account, a segment, or the whole book of business, and feed that back to product/marketing.

Turn on Section ranking for a playlist

Section ranking is an entry-page type on the CYOA welcome screen. You pick it in the CYOA editor.

  1. Open the playlist and switch to the CYOA editor view.
  2. In the entry-screen mode picker, choose Section ranking (a.k.a. Intent Survey).
  3. Fill in the opening line and context that will appear above the ranking widget on the welcome screen (for example: "What matters most to you? Drag to reorder.").
  4. Build your sections in the Section ranking editor tab:
    • Add each section by name.
    • Attach entity chips (screens, sub-demos, embedded content) that belong to each section — drag them in from the entity list on the side.
    • Reorder sections by dragging their handles; the order you set here is the default order the buyer sees before they change it.
  5. Publish the playlist.

You can switch back to a standard Welcome page or another entry mode at any time — the ranking data lives on the playlist and isn't lost when you toggle the mode off.

What the buyer sees

On the welcome screen, the buyer sees:

  • Your opening line and context at the top.
  • A card listing every section, in the default order you set.
  • A drag handle on each section, so they can reorder from most to least important.
  • A Start my demo button.

When they click Start my demo, the "Your playlist" sidebar slides in with the sections in their ranked order — so they can walk the demo in the sequence they care about, not the one you happened to author.

If a buyer decides mid-demo that they got it wrong, the player sidebar exposes a Change my ranking control that reopens the ranking screen.

Insights and analytics

Once buyers start ranking, Section ranking data flows into Playlist Insights alongside your existing analytics.

KPI tiles

  • Ranking completion % — how many viewers who reached the welcome screen actually submitted a ranking.
  • Sections per viewer — the average number of sections a viewer marked before starting.

Buyer priorities card
A dedicated card next to the items table shows, per section, how buyers rated it. Each row uses neutral color segments with a legend so you can compare priority distributions across sections at a glance. Hover a segment for the exact count; long section titles are truncated with a tooltip.

What they said mattered
A panel + one-sentence summary highlighting the sections that most viewers ranked in their top slot.

Sessions table

  • A Top priority column shows the section each viewer put first.
  • A Their ranking column in the session drawer shows the full ranking that viewer submitted, with a tri-state time indicator for how long they spent per section.
  • Both are included in the CSV export.

Items table

  • The items-analytics table gains Section and Signal columns so you can pivot per-item engagement against the ranking signal for that section.

FAQs

Can I still use a normal Welcome page instead?

Yes. Section ranking is one of several entry-page modes on a CYOA playlist. Pick Welcome page in the entry-screen mode picker to revert to a standard welcome.

Do buyers have to rank every section?

No. The ranking is optional. If a buyer skips it and clicks Start my demo, they enter the playlist in your default section order and are counted against Ranking completion % as a non-completion.

What happens if I add or remove a section after buyers have ranked?

Existing sessions keep the ranking they submitted. New viewers see the current section list. Sessions taken before the change stay attached to the section IDs they ranked.

Can buyers change their ranking mid-demo?

Yes — the player sidebar exposes a Change my ranking control that reopens the ranking screen. Their new ranking replaces the previous one for that session.

Where do I see who ranked what?

Open Playlist Insights for the playlist. The Buyer priorities card gives you the roll-up; the Sessions table's Top priority column and the per-session drawer's Their ranking column give you the per-viewer detail.
