Make a screenshot screen editable

Overview

A screen imported as a single flat image — a PowerPoint slide, a PDF page, a pasted screenshot, or anything uploaded through Import screenshots — arrives in the editor as one <img>. You can place guides and sticky notes on it, but the content inside the image can't be edited, interactions can't be attached, and AI editing is locked.

Make editable converts that screenshot into real, editable HTML with AI, so the screen behaves like a captured screen: text, buttons, inputs and layout become individually selectable and stylable. Any guides you had already pinned to the screen stay attached once the conversion is applied.

When Make Editable Appears

  • The current screen is a flat media screen — one imported image, not yet converted.
  • You've selected into the screen content (the top editor toolbar is showing element tools).

The action is offered in two places on a flat media screen:

  • A Make editable button, with a wand icon, in the element toolbar at the top of the editor.
  • The Make editable item in the element's ⋯ (More) menu.

Both open the same AI review flow.

Convert a Screenshot

  1. Open a demo and navigate to the screenshot screen you want to convert.
  2. Click an element on the screen so the top toolbar shows element tools.
  3. Click Make editable (wand icon) in the toolbar. The tooltip reads Convert this screenshot into editable content.
  4. Walnut highlights the screenshot with an animated scan while AI generates editable HTML in its place. Conversions typically take around 30 seconds; the editor stays responsive.
  5. The generated HTML appears in place on the canvas — what you see is what will be kept. A review popover opens above the screen.

Review and Refine

The review popover sits above the converted screen with these controls:

  • Preset shortcuts — one-click adjustments you can toggle on before regenerating:
    • Use only visible data — only use values and labels actually visible in the source image; don't invent data.
    • Make inputs work — make every form field, dropdown and toggle functional.
    • Match layout closely — stay closer to the original image's layout, spacing and styling.
    • Simplify — keep it simple; implement only the most obvious interactions.
  • Ask for a change… — a free-text field for your own instructions. Press Enter or click Regenerate to re-run.
  • Match — a fidelity score (0–100%) comparing the result against the source image, with a coloured bar: green ≥80, amber 50–79, red <50.
  • Fix gaps — appears next to the score when Walnut has specific suggestions to improve fidelity; one click re-runs the conversion with those gaps as the instructions.
  • Regenerate (circular arrow) — re-runs the conversion with the current pills + change-request text.
  • Decline — reverts the conversion and leaves the screen as a screenshot.
  • Accept — keeps the conversion. Clicking anywhere outside the popover also accepts it.

If the conversion fails, Walnut shows an error toast with a Retry action; the screen is left untouched until a conversion is accepted.

After Accepting

Once accepted, the screen becomes editable like any captured screen:

  • Click into text to edit it, change fonts, colours and sizes.
  • Add interactions, links, variables and smart objects to the elements inside.
  • Attach hotspots and new guide steps anywhere on the screen.
  • Any guides already placed on the screenshot before the conversion remain attached, so you don't have to re-anchor your existing story.

The conversion is a storyline edit, so undo/redo in the editor rolls it back the usual way.

FAQs

Which screens can be made editable?

Any flat media screen — screens imported from PowerPoint, PDF, Figma assets, pasted images, uploaded screenshots, or the resource hub as a static image. Video screens are not covered.

Does Make editable change how the screen looks?

The goal is a visual match of the source image. Use the Match score and the preset pills to steer the result; Fix gaps feeds Walnut's own critique back as the next instruction so fidelity improves across iterations.

Will my guides survive the conversion?

Yes. Guides, sticky notes and other overlays attached to the screenshot stay in place after the conversion is accepted.

Can I convert just part of a screenshot?

No — Make editable converts the whole screenshot screen. To convert a single image sitting inside an otherwise captured screen, use Convert to interactive element on that image instead.

Can I undo the conversion later?

Decline inside the review popover reverts it immediately. After accepting, the conversion is an edit on the storyline and can be rolled back through the editor's undo history.
