Remove variables from a template with AI Mode
Remove variables from a template with AI Mode
About This Feature
Ask AI Mode to remove variables from the template you're editing and it will delete them in one step, keeping every place each variable is used — screen text, images, colors, and guide steps — showing the value it shows now as fixed content. Instead of opening every element that still points at a variable and clearing it by hand, you confirm the removal once in chat and the template is left with those variables gone and nothing broken behind them.

Location: AI Mode on any template → ask the agent to remove variables
How It Works
Ask the agent in plain words — for example:
"Remove all variables from this template." "Delete the Company Name and First Name variables." "Get rid of every image variable."
AI Mode runs the request in three stages:
- Survey. It looks at the template's variables — all of them, or the ones you named, or every variable of a specific kind (text, date, image, color) — and counts where each is used, broken down into screen text, images, colors, and guide steps. Nothing is changed yet.
- Confirm. AI Mode posts a confirmation card in the chat naming each variable it is about to remove, how many places it is used in, and the fact that each place will keep its current value as fixed content. If a variable is filled by a URL preset, a CRM record, or a lead form, the card also notes that it will stop being filled from that source. The card also tells you that a version of the template will be saved first.
- Remove. Only after you confirm, AI Mode saves a version of the template, deletes the confirmed variables, and converts every place each one was used into the plain value it currently shows. It then replies with what was removed and how many places were updated.
If a variable comes from your company's variables library, it is only unlinked from this template — the library entry and other templates that use it are left alone.
What Happens to the Places That Used a Variable
Every place a removed variable appeared is rewritten as fixed content showing the variable's current value, so nothing on the template goes blank or breaks:
- Screen text keeps the value the variable was showing (the default value, or the value a preset or demo had filled in while editing) as plain text in the same element.
- Image variables leave the current image behind as a fixed image on the screen.
- Color variables leave the current color behind as a fixed color on the elements they tinted.
- Guide step text keeps the value the variable was showing inside the step.
Because the fallback is the variable's current value, there's no missing-placeholder behavior to clean up afterwards — the template publishes without the "variable has no value" errors you'd see if a reference to a deleted variable were left behind.
If a translated guide step can't be updated during the removal, AI Mode reports how many steps were affected so you can review them; the removal itself still goes through.
Recover a Template After a Removal
Removing variables cannot be undone from chat, so AI Mode saves a version of the template to Version History before it writes anything. If the result isn't what you wanted, open Version History and restore the saved version — or make a copy of it — to get the variables back exactly as they were.
Tips
- Ask by name when you can. "Remove the Company Name variable" is more precise than "remove the first text variable" — the survey step looks variables up by name and will tell you when a name doesn't match anything on the template rather than guessing.
- Narrow by kind for bulk cleanups. Phrases like "remove every image variable" or "delete all color variables" let AI Mode scope the survey to one kind at a time, which is useful when you're retiring a whole category of personalization.
- Removing is per template. A library variable removed from this template stays in your library and in every other template that uses it. To take it out everywhere, remove it from the library.
- Read the confirmation card. It names every variable about to be removed and how many places each is used in. If a variable is filled by URL, CRM or a lead form, the card calls that out so you know what downstream links will stop personalizing.
FAQs
Can I undo this from the chat? No. The removal is not undoable through AI Mode. A version of the template is saved first, so restore that version from Version History (or make a copy of it) if you need the variables back.
Does this delete the variable from my company's variables library? No. If the variable comes from the library, only its link to this template is removed. The library entry and any other templates using it are untouched.
What happens to screens, images and guides that referenced the variable? Every place is rewritten as fixed content showing the value the variable was showing at the moment of removal. Screen text keeps the text, image variables leave the current image behind, color variables leave the current color behind, and guide step text keeps its text.
Will the template publish without errors after a removal? Yes. Because each reference is replaced with its current value as fixed content, there are no dangling variable references left to break publishing.
Will a URL preset, CRM record or lead form I've already set up still personalize these variables? No. Once a variable is removed from the template, demos created from CRM records, links carrying preset values, and lead-form answers all stop filling it in on this template. The confirmation card calls this out for any variable it applies to.
