Create Offline Demos

Overview

Walnut’s Offline Demos feature allows you to download demos so they can be played even when an internet connection is unavailable. This makes it easier to present demos reliably in environments such as conferences, field meetings, executive briefings, or travel situations where connectivity may be limited.

Once downloaded, the demo can be launched locally from your browser. Viewer engagement data will automatically sync back to your Walnut account the next time the device reconnects to the internet.

Offline demos are available as a paid add-on feature. If you would like to enable this capability for your workspace, please contact your Customer Success Manager or reach out to Walnut Support.

Before You Start

  • Roles and permissions
Users with the Presenter role or higher who have the Walnut Chrome Extension installed can download and run offline demos. Offline demo files are stored locally and cannot be transferred between devices.
  • Browser and device settings
For best performance, ensure you are using the latest version of a supported browser (such as Chrome or Edge) on macOS or Windows.
  • Local file storage
Offline demos are stored in your browser’s local storage. There is no file size limit imposed by Walnut, but available storage depends on the free space on your device.

Offline Demo Key Features

  • Sync engagement data
Viewer activity is recorded while the demo is played offline. Once the device reconnects to the internet, engagement data automatically syncs back to your Walnut account.
  • Play demos without an internet connection
Downloaded demos can be launched directly from your browser even when offline. For easier access, it is recommended to bookmark the demo URL.
  • Updating offline demos
Offline demos do not automatically update when the source demo changes. If the demo is updated in Walnut, you will need to re-download it to access the latest version offline.
  • Removing offline demos
Offline demos are stored in your browser’s site data. To remove them, clear the browser’s site storage or site data for Walnut.
Tip:
Download your offline demo only after the online version is fully finalized. If changes are made later, you will need to re-download the demo to update the offline copy.

Create an Offline Demo

Offline demos can be downloaded from either:

  • The Walnut Chrome Extension
  • Your Walnut Library

1. Download an Offline Demo from the Walnut Extension

To download an offline demo from the extension:

  1. Open the Walnut Chrome Extension.
  2. Select the Play Demos tab.
  3. Locate the demo you want to download.
  4. Hover over the demo name (without opening it) and click Download.
  5. Once the download completes, a confirmation message will appear.
  6. Bookmark the demo URL in your browser so you can easily launch it during presentations.

If changes are later made to the demo in Walnut, remember that the offline version will not automatically update.

2. Download an Offline Demo from the Walnut Library

To download an offline demo from your library:

  1. Open the Walnut Library and locate the demo.
  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the demo.
  3. Select Make available offline.
  4. Click Download.
  5. Once the download completes, you will see a confirmation message.
  6. Bookmark the demo URL in your browser for quick access during presentations.

Collect Leads from Offline Demos

Offline demos can also be configured for lead capture, which is especially useful for events, conference booths, and kiosk-style presentations where multiple viewers may interact with the demo throughout the day.

To enable this behavior, add the following parameter to your demo URL:

kiosk=true

When this parameter is added:

  • If a demo gate is enabled, each new session will prompt viewers to enter their email address before accessing the demo.
  • The demo will automatically reset to the start screen after approximately 10 seconds of inactivity, ensuring the experience is ready for the next viewer.

This setup allows presenters to collect leads from multiple viewers without manually clearing session data between presentations.

FAQs

Will the browser I use affect offline demos?

Offline demos are stored locally in the browser that downloaded them. Modern browsers such as Chrome and Edge typically provide the most reliable experience. If you download a demo in one browser, it will only be available offline in that same browser on that device.

What happens if I clear my browser cache?

Offline demos are stored in the browser’s local site data. If you clear your browser cache or site data, the offline demo files may be removed and will need to be downloaded again.

Can presenters use offline demos for every presentation?

Yes. Some presenters prefer launching the offline version of a demo for every presentation to ensure consistent performance and eliminate reliance on internet connectivity.

Is engagement data still tracked when using offline demos?

Yes. Viewer interactions are recorded while the demo is played offline. Once the device reconnects to the internet, engagement data automatically syncs back to your Walnut account and will appear in Insights.

Do offline demos automatically update if the source demo changes?

No. Offline demos do not automatically update when changes are made to the original demo in Walnut. If the source demo is updated, you will need to re-download the demo to access the latest version offline.

Can offline demos collect leads?

Yes. If a demo gate is enabled, viewers can still submit their email before entering the demo. Using the kiosk=true URL parameter allows multiple viewers to interact with the demo consecutively while ensuring each new session prompts for identification.

Can offline demos be shared with other devices?

No. Offline demos are stored locally in the browser that downloaded them and cannot be transferred between devices. Each presenter must download the demo individually on the device they plan to use.

Do offline demos expire?

Yes. Offline demos remain available for 14 days after they are downloaded. After this period, the demo will need to be downloaded again in order to continue using it offline.

This expiration window helps ensure that presenters are using a relatively recent version of the demo and prevents outdated content from being used in live presentations.

Best practice: If you are preparing for an upcoming event or presentation, download or refresh your offline demo shortly before the meeting to ensure the experience remains available throughout the event.

Can playlists be used offline?

Offline support for Walnut Playlists is currently in development and will be available soon.

Today, individual demos can be downloaded and used offline. Playlists, however, still require an internet connection to load the full experience.

Once offline playlists are available, presenters will be able to download entire curated demo experiences and present them without relying on an internet connection — making them especially useful for conferences, field presentations, and executive briefings.
