Overview
The Update Screens feature will help creators maintain and keep their demos up-to-date by quickly replacing existing screens with new ones while keeping all edits. Instead of deleting and recapturing screens to address product changes, new features, or missing flows, you can use the new ‘Update’ feature which will keep your links and guides intact! This makes it much faster to recapture a screen so you can spend less time sifting through versions, and more time getting demos out the door.
Instructions
Updating a screen can be done in two different ways, either from the editor or straight from the extension.
From the Template Editor:
- Click Edit when viewing a template in which you would like to update a screen.
- In the Links editing mode, hover over a screen thumbnail and choose the three dots in the upper right corner of the thumbnail.
- Choose 'Update Screen' from the dropdown which will prompt the extension to open.
- The extension will automatically be set to the new 'Update Screen' mode and indicate which screen you are looking to replace.
- Simply capture the same screen in this mode, and then return to the Editor.
From the Extension:
- Launch the Walnut extension and choose the template in which you would like to update a screen.
- Choose 'Update Screen' mode from the extension pop-in in the bottom left corner. Then choose the specific screen you'd like to update.
- Simply capture the same screen in this mode, and then return to the Editor.
Once you've navigated back to the Walnut Editor, you'll receive a pop-up window to confirm transferring Edits and Guides to the new screen.

Edits
Edits that can be applied to the new screen will be shown in a preview, with the exact number of how many can be successfully transferred over. If certain edits cannot be transferred over, it could be the element has changed in the new version and therefore cannot be associated to the previous element. Edits include Smart Objects, Variables, Links, content edits and more. -
Guides
Guides will be placed onto the same elements if available. If the new screen is missing the element that the guide was initially placed on, you will receive a prompt to manually select a new element for the guide to be placed on marked with a red stamp.

FAQs
Can I recover a screen if I accept the updates?
It is important to note that Accepting the Update or Cancelling the Update are both final actions. Once you've accepted a newly captured screen, the old one is removed it cannot be reverted. Similarly if you cancel the update, you will need to go back and recapture the screen in order to update it again.
Can I edit an updated screen?
You cannot make edits to the screen before accepting the changes. After you have accepted the updated screen to your template, you can make any changes needed.
Can I create demos with unlinked guides due to a screen update?
To promise the demo's quality and consistent flow, we do not allow you to publish demos with guide steps not connected to an element.
If my product completely changes its UI, for example a rebrand, should I use the updated screens feature?
No, If there is a big change in the screen's layout, it’s better to recapture rather than using the Update Screens feature. Updating the template screen is a manual process that works on a single screen at a time, if any changes are in order due to a change of narrative or use case, it will likely be easier to recapture everything in the regular capturing mode.
