This article will guide you through the steps to create a Guided demo. Before you get started, we recommend viewing the corresponding example if you haven’t already, it will make a lot more sense!
What is a guided demo?
A guided demo guides a viewer (no pun intended) through a structured flow, usually with some added commentary. It’s a personalized way to tell your product story without needing to be live on a call with someone.
Creating a guided demo
To create a guided demo you’ll first need to create a guide. A guide is a flow that your users can go through. Every demo can have multiple guides and users can switch between them using the Guide toolbar(more on that later…).
Within guides, you can add annotations. Each annotation is a step that the user will go through. There are three types: Modal, Tooltip, and Hotspot.
Beginning: Creating the Welcome Modal
To create the Welcome modal (as seen in the example Walnut) follow these steps:
Add the annotation
Change the annotation type to “Modal”
Dim the background
Add an avatar image
Middle: Using tooltips & hotspots
Most Walnuts use tooltips and hotspots to guide a viewer through the middle section of the demo (where the majority of the steps will go).
Here’s what a tooltip looks like:
And a hotspot:
Here’s how to add those annotations to your storyline:
Add the annotation
Change the annotation type to “Tooltip” or “Hotspot”
💡Bonus tip: For this middle section, we recommend keeping it to ~5-7 screens to keep the viewer engaged.
End: Conclusion Modal
Create the same modal as the introductory modal
Add your CTA, for example:
Link to restart the demo
Link to your calendar to schedule time
A case study
A link to learn more
Once you’re done be sure to share it with a teammate for review or create a demo!
💡 Bonus tip:
Using the guide toolbar
The guide toolbar allows your viewers to navigate through different flows in your Walnut, depending on what their interested in (sort of like a choose your own adventure!)
Here’s what the Guide toolbar looks like on a Walnut:
To turn the Guide toolbar on, just go to the Demo in your demo library, click “Share demo” and toggle on the Guide toolbar:
