## **Overview**

Bring a product recording into a Walnut demo and either keep it as a single video screen or let Walnut split it into separate screens at the key moments it finds in the recording. You can **upload a video file** you already have, or **record your screen or phone directly in Walnut**, then review and adjust the resulting screens before the import runs.

The whole flow lives in the editor's capture modal — the same one used to add screenshots and screens — so a video sits alongside the rest of your demo's content.

---

## **Open the import**

Open the capture modal from the editor (**Capture with screenshot and video**) or from the new‑demo flow. You'll see three ways to add material:

- **HTML web capture** — interactive screens captured with the Chrome extension.
- **App recording** — **Record my screen** or **Record my phone** (mirrored).
- **Upload screenshots and/or videos** — files already on your computer.

To import a video, either drop a file into the picker, or use **Record my screen** / **Record my phone** to record a tab or a mirrored device straight into the modal. A recording made in Walnut lands in the picker as if you had uploaded it.

:::note[Accepted files and limits]

- **Formats:** MP4, MOV or WebM
- **Size:** up to **5 GB** per video
- **Length:** up to **60 minutes** per video
- **One at a time:** a video imports on its own — you can't mix a video with screenshots in the same import.

The picker reads these limits back to you (`"Or one MP4, MOV or WebM video up to 5 GB and 60 minutes"`) and refuses files that fall outside them, with a per‑file reason.

## **Choose: whole video, or split into screens**

Once the video is picked, Walnut uploads it and analyzes the recording to find **key moments** — points where the screen changes meaningfully. While that runs, the review step shows **"Preparing the video"** and then **"Finding the key moments. A long video can take several minutes."**

When the analysis finishes you have two paths:

- **Keep it as one video screen.** Remove every moment (or leave the recording with none) and the import creates a single video screen. The confirm button changes to **Add as one video**. A banner reminds you: *"No key moments, so the whole video will be added as one screen."*
- **Split it into screens.** Each key moment becomes its own screen in the imported demo.

If analysis fails you can still **Retry**, or fall back to importing the whole video as one screen.

---

## **Review the key moments**

The review panel shows the recording in a player with a scrubbable timeline, and below it a horizontal strip of thumbnails — one per moment Walnut proposed, numbered and timestamped in order.

For each moment you can:

- **Add a moment** at the current playhead with the **Add moment** button (keyboard‑reachable; up to **100 moments** per video).
- **Remove a moment** from the strip's trash icon.
- **Nudge** a moment earlier or later with the chevron buttons (100 ms steps; hold Shift on the slider for 1‑second steps).
- **Rename a screen** inline in the moment card (the name becomes the imported screen's name).
- **Make it a video clip** instead of a still screenshot — see the next section.
- **Keep or delete a suggested hotspot** when Walnut detected a click point at that moment. The suggested hotspot is drawn on the player preview as a dashed brand‑coloured circle labelled **Suggested**, and the thumbnail is marked with a click icon when a hotspot will be kept.

Moments that Walnut classified as minor changes are tagged **Small change** on the thumbnail so you can decide whether they are worth their own screen.

---

## **Turn a moment into a video clip**

Each moment can become either a **Screenshot** (a still frame of that moment, imported as a normal Walnut screen) or a **Video clip** (a trimmed portion of the recording imported as a video screen). Use the **Screenshot / Video clip** segmented control on the selected moment to switch between the two.

When you choose **Video clip**:

- Walnut sets a default clip around the moment (about 2 seconds on each side).
- A trimmer appears with draggable **Clip start** and **Clip end** handles, plus start/end **time fields** you can type into directly (`m:ss.t`).
- The clip length must be at least **0.5 s** and at most **60 s**; the handles clamp to that range.
- The moment itself stays marked on the trimmer track so you can see where the point of interest sits inside the clip.
- The thumbnail is badged **Clip Ns** so you can see at a glance which moments will be clips.

Clip conversion is only available when the recording is longer than the minimum clip length.

## **Name the screens, and name the demo**

While you review, Walnut suggests names for each screen from what's on the recording. The names appear under each thumbnail and in the moment's **Screen name** field — you can edit them or leave the suggestion.

When you're importing into a **new demo**, an **AI summary** panel also appears next to the player with:

- A proposed **Demo title**.
- A proposed **Description**.
- A **Use as demo title & description** checkbox — leave it on to apply the suggestion to the new demo when the import finishes, or clear it to keep your own.
- A **Regenerate** button if you want another take, and a *"Couldn't summarise — you can still create the screens"* fallback with its own retry if the summary fails.

The summary step is optional; the screens will still be created if the summary isn't ready or fails.

---

## **Confirm and import**

The confirm button reflects what you'll get:

- **Create demo** — when you're importing into a brand‑new demo.
- **Add as one video** — when the recording stays as a single video screen.
- **Create** — otherwise.

Walnut uploads the recording once and reuses that upload for the analysis, the review and the import, so confirming after review doesn't re‑upload the file. The import runs in the background; the progress row shows one line per screen being created, and you can keep editing the demo as rows finish. The run is also resumable — if you reload the tab while the import is still running, Walnut rejoins it from where it was.

If an individual screen fails to create, you can **Retry failed** without redoing the ones that succeeded, or go **Back to review** to adjust the moments and try again.

## **FAQs**

### **What file formats and sizes can I import?**
MP4, MOV or WebM, up to **5 GB** and **60 minutes** per video. Only one video is imported at a time, and it cannot be mixed with screenshots in the same import.

### **How does Walnut decide where to split the video?**
Walnut analyzes the uploaded recording and proposes **key moments** at points where the screen changes. You can accept the proposals, nudge their timestamps, add new ones at any playhead position, or remove any you don't want.

### **Can I import the recording as one video screen instead of splitting it?**
Yes. Remove every moment from the strip, or leave the recording with none. The confirm button changes to **Add as one video** and the import creates a single video screen.

### **Can I keep part of the video as a motion clip inside the demo?**
Yes. Switch any moment from **Screenshot** to **Video clip**, then trim the clip start and end with the handles or the time fields. Clips are between 0.5 s and 60 s long.

### **What about the clicks I made in the recording?**
When Walnut detects a click point at a moment, it offers a **Suggested hotspot** on that screen. You can **Keep** or **Delete** the hotspot per moment before importing.

### **Is there a limit on how many screens one video can become?**
Yes — up to **100 moments** per video, so up to 100 screens from one recording.

### **I don't want to upload a file — can I just record a tab in Walnut?**
Yes. Use **Record my screen** or **Record my phone** inside the capture modal. The recording appears in the picker in the same place as an uploaded file and goes through the same analyze‑and‑review flow.

### **Can I review the screens before they're actually created?**
Yes — the review step is the whole middle of the flow. Nothing is written to your demo until you press the confirm button.
