## **Overview**

**Video** **Capture mode** lets you record your product directly from the [**Walnut** **Chrome** **Extension**](/help/demos/getting-started/chrome-extension) and automatically insert the recording into your demo template as a screen.

![](pathname:///images/ef7903053d89b855.png)

Use Video Capture when an interaction needs to be shown in motion, such as **drag-and-drop actions**, **animated transitions**, or **dynamic UI behavior** that static screens cannot easily represent.

To record a workflow, open the Walnut extension, select More capture methods, and choose Video Capture. Record the interaction in your browser tab, then stop the recording. Walnut automatically creates a new video screen in your template.

**Key Capabilities:**

- **Record full browser tab:** Capture product workflows directly from the Walnut extension.
- **Resolution-aware capture:** Recordings follow the same capture workflow as standard screens and automatically align with the resolution configured in your template or extension resizer, helping maintain consistent screen alignment and avoid cropping or formatting issues.
- **Less manual setup:** No separate recording tools, manual uploads, or embedded video formatting required.

---

## **Before You Begin**

**Video** **Capture** is available in the [**Walnut Chrome Extension**](/help/demos/getting-started/chrome-extension) as a new capture mode.

If you do not see Video Capture yet, update your extension by removing the Walnut extension from Chrome and [**reinstalling it from the Chrome Web Store**.](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/walnut-sales-demo-platfor/mccegadjoafkdahijbbincjlicfjjibd)

During the update, the extension may temporarily disappear from your Chrome toolbar. This is expected. When prompted, **click** **Enable** and **approve the permission request**.

Once the extension is updated and re-enabled, **Video** **Capture** will appear under **More** **capture** **methods** in the extension.

## **Quick Start Guide**

:::note[Recording limit]

Video Capture recordings can be up to **5 minutes** long per recording. For longer workflows, split the flow into multiple recordings and add them as separate video screens in your demo.

:::

Follow these steps to record a video workflow and add it to your Walnut demo template as a video template screen.

**1\. Open the Walnut extension** on the product page you want to record.

**2\. Click More capture methods** in the extension panel.

**3\. Select Video Capture** from the capture mode dropdown in the Advanced Extension Widget.

**4\.** Click the **purple** **capture** **button** to start recording. Walnut records the full browser tab using the resolution configured in your template or extension resizer to keep the screen aligned with your demo. **Each recording can be up to 5 minutes long.**

**5\. Use the recording controls** to pause, cancel. **Click Done** to finish the recording.

**6\. The recording is automatically added** to the **Screens** section of your template as a new video screen. There is no separate upload or manual embed step required.

:::tip[Tip]

Once the video recording is added to your template, you can place guide steps, hotspots, and screen links on top of the video using the [**Custom** **Elements**](#h_add_guides_video_screens) feature.

:::

---

### **Preview and playback the recording**

Video screens include playback controls so you can preview the recording inside the demo player while editing the template. **These controls are visible to the template editor only and are not shown to viewers in the published demo.**

- Play and pause the recording
-   Scrub through the timeline
-   Trim the recording
-   Adjust playback speed (0.5× – 2×)

## **Add Guides and Links to Video Screens**

To place guide steps or screen links on top of a video screen, use the **Custom Elements** feature. Custom Elements allow you to create clickable anchors directly on the video so viewers can follow the guided experience or navigate to other parts of the demo.

### **How to add guides or links to a video screen**

**1.** Open your demo template in the editor.

**2.** Navigate to the video screen created from your recording.

**3.** Click the the **Custom Elements** icon in the editor toolbar.

**4.** Drag the crosshair cursor to create your custom element, then hover over the borders to reposition or resize it.

## **FAQs**

### **I do not see Video Capture mode in the extension. What should I do?**

Remove the Walnut extension from Chrome and reinstall it from the Chrome Web Store. Then re-enable the extension if prompted and approve the new permission request for screen capture.

---

### **Why is Chrome asking me to approve a new permission?**

This is standard browser language for screen recording and screen capture capabilities. It is expected as part of the extension upgrade and is safe to approve.

---

### **What does Video Capture record?**

This release captures the active **browser tab** only. Full desktop capture and individual application window capture are not included in this release.

---

### **Is there a recording length limit for Video Capture?**

Yes. Each Video Capture recording can be up to **5 minutes** long.

If your workflow is longer than 5 minutes, record the flow in multiple segments and add each recording as a separate video screen in your demo. This approach also makes it easier to guide viewers through the experience using annotations, guides, or screen links between video segments.

---

### **Can I trim, crop, or splice the recording in Walnut?**

You can adjust the start and end time of the recording in the editor to control which portion of the video plays in the demo.

Advanced video editing features such as cropping or splicing multiple clips are not included in this release.

---

### **Can I add guides and annotations to a video screen?**

Yes. Video screens support the same settings as other screens with embedded video, including guide connections, screen links, and annotation elements.

To place guide steps or screen links on a video screen, use the [**Custom** **Elements**](#h_add_guides_video_screens) feature. Custom Elements allow you to position interactive elements on top of the video so viewers can follow the guided flow or navigate to other screens.

---

### **Do video screens autoplay for viewers?**

Yes. Video screens created with **Video Capture** autoplay by default when the demo reaches that screen.

Playback controls are not shown to the demo viewer. The video plays automatically as part of the guided demo experience.

This helps keep the flow of the demo consistent and ensures viewers see the intended interaction or animation without needing to manually start playback.
